Meanwhile magazine: Call for submission

Submitted by marcel on Mon, 2005-07-18 09:28.

The theme of the first issue is going to be: Meanwhile, in a galaxy far, far away...
Important notice: a galaxy does not need to be a space alienlike environment. Interpret it freely. It can be something you don't know the existance of, it can be a whole different 'galaxy' to you. When you're into design, music already can be a 'galaxy' which is far, far away...

In Meanwhile we only place original pieces, especially created for the magazine. At this website you can read why, what it is about, etc. Always keep in mind the theme of the issue. Of course, the magazine will be editted and because it's the first, we need to be really critical because this first issue needs to set the standard for the following issues immediately.

Meanwhile in a galaxy far, far away?
Meanwhile in a galaxy far, far away... because that theme entirely fits what we're doing Lowlands Festival at Texelse Boys Playground. Knowing the average people don't know what Texelse Boys is, we had to find a theme that made it easier to explain. So we decided a experimental Lab idea, but then refering to Area 51 – you know, the UFO and testsite of the USA in Rockwell – would be a good point of departure. People know that from X-files and movies, etc. So the compound at the festival strongly refers to that too, without the UFO bullshit.
In Meanwhile we will also report on the festival, place artwork made there, etc. Or even add a cd/cd-rom/dvd with material like video/music/etc. And of course as stated, original pieces of artwork.

By doing something for the Texelse Boys project you become Texelse Boys yourself. Also here, it’s important that we need to maintain a high quality level. We do not want all artwork of people why bought a Mac and tried Photoshop for the first time and send us the results of the lessons which come with the application. Equally important: it's not all about design, we really want the other disciplines to contribute too, like music, writing, architecture, etc. in order to get and stay inspired with each possible human sense, even the sixth, ideally the seventh and other undiscovered ones too.

Something you make for the project is making just that what you wanted to make all the time, but you didn't had the time for, or a good reason. Having a platform, knowing that it's going to be seen by other people, provides you that good reason so you can make time for it. You do not work for a client. That's what you do during daily hours. It pays the bills, and most of the time you can be 60-90% happy with it. We give you full freedom, so you can go for the 100%, we don't pay you. We put it out there with full credits. So you decide what is best and when it is at its best to be published. At the end, it will get paid, because it will create work, people see/read/hear/feel/smell your work and want you to make something for them too based on what they have seen. So that 60-90% could become 80-99%.

Deadline
We do not have a deadline yet. We don’t even know when we are going to print it, but if we have to guess, it will be in November or December this year. We want it to be at its best, to provide you the time to make it your best work so far. But as always, the sooner we receive your work, the better.

Practical matters
Half the dimensions of a regular magazine, but double the amount of pages. Meanwhile will definitely be a magazine in its look and feel, but since its size mirrors that of a book. Therefore, it will feel more substantial, and will enjoy a longer life span than a magazine. Preferably we would like Meanwhile to be about 256 pages, not necessarily printed in full colour. Our ambition is to become and stay exclusive. When it’s out of stock, well, too bad.
One single page of Meanwhile will be 170 x 240 mm, a spread 340 x 240 mm. All your artwork needs to be printing quality, so at least 300 pdi.
You can send us as much as you want to, but we can’t guarantee you it gets placed in Meanwhile or the cd/cd-rom/dvd. Of course, all submissions will be reviewed and we will contact you if we use it in the magazine.
If your work won’t be published for whatever reason, no worries. We can still make it a postcard, poster, dvd, etc. and it will always be published at the Texelse Boys website. Or it can be used for promotion of Meanwhile.
The design for Meanwhile itself will never be more explicit as the placed artwork and/or content. The design will support the creativity, making it easy to browse through the magazine. A selected member of the Texelse Boys network will design each cover. Besides always using the provided Meanwhile logo, the designer of the cover will be completely free to interpret the cover/logo in anyway he/she feels like.

Editors
Editors are always members of the Texelse Boys project, and these will be always changing. But, the Texelse Boys Foundation and Artmiks [image builders], as creators of the basic concept and design of Meanwhile will always be involved. Their involvement, will, over time be one of overseeing and ensuring the quality of the magazine and it’s overall content and design.

Publicity
